The Chinese lunar calendar is the longest chorological record in history, dating from 2637 B.C. when the Emperor Huang Ti Introduced the first cycle of this zodiac in the 61st year of his reign, it takes 60 years for a complete cycle to be made. A cycle is made up of five simple cycles of 12 years each. Twelve animals were assigned to each of the 12 years.
During the complete 60-year cycle each of the animal signs is combined with the five main elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These five elements are further split into magnetic poles, positive and negative, which are also referred to as the Yin and the Yang.
There are some years, which, because of the element they are combined with are dreaded by all. One of those years is the Fire Horse. But on the other hand there are some wonderful years like the year we are in now - which is the year of the Dragon and a very lucky year for all.
It is an easy science as far as the basic animals being easy to read and put together if you are looking for a mate. It is a fun way to better understand family members and the friends in your life.
Each sign covers a whole year, so it takes twelve years to complete a whole cycle. Unlike Western Astrology where each sign is only one month, and it takes only one year to complete a cycle. Please note that each Chinese year begins not on January 1st but rather on the first new moon of the year, occurring in either January or February. So, if you were born in either January or February, you will need to determine whether you were born before or after the first new moon of your birth year in order to determine your Chinese Sign.

The legend goes as follows: the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed the Earth. Only the twelve animals mentioned above came to bid him farewell. As a reward he named a year after each of them in the order that they arrived. The animal ruling your year has a profound influence on your life. And as the Chinese say "This is the animal that hides in your heart."
